Getting shut out by Sweden in group play, Canada was locked out of finishing in top spot in the section, and settles for the second seed for the quarter-final matchups. That means they get a rematch with the team they battled for gold a year ago: Czechia.
The Czechs didn’t have the same tournament they put together in the 2023 event when they went into the quarters as the top seed. They started off with a loss to rival Slovakia, and also lost to Team USA in a shootout to finish third in Group B. They get a tough matchup in the first playoff game, and it’s going to be very difficult for them to earn a medal for a second straight year. They will try to capitalize on their chances, and hope Canada’s offence continues to falter versus stronger teams in this tournament.
