Xavier Ouellet named captain of the Laval Rocket

With Byron Froese traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Dale Weise and Christian Folin, the Laval Rocket were suddenly left without their captain for a second consecutive season. The team acted quickly, naming Xavier Ouellet as team’s new captain Tuesday morning.

Ouellet was chosen by the Laval Rocket coaching staff and Montreal Canadiens management. He replaces Froese and becomes the second captain in team history.

He has three goals, and 14 assists in 21 games for the Rocket this year, easily their most prolific point producer in his time there this season and a big reason the power play has improved.

This is not the first time that Ouellet is wearing the ‘C’ for Joël Bouchard. He was the captain of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada for two seasons under the Rocket head coach.

One would think this is bad news for his NHL future, but remember that Froese was recalled just a handful of games into his reign as captain last season.

The first home game for the new captain will be February 22 against the Manitoba Moose. The Rocket have five road games before then.
