After 14 years, Sweden’s winning streak in the group stage of the World Juniors came to an end last night. That’s bad news for having an automatic storyline for each game they play, but possibly a good thing for the players on this makeshift Sweden team that came together after COVID-19 wrought havoc on their team. The pressure to keep that streak alive is gone, and the players can just focus on the task at hand.
Tonight that task is winning the game to take first spot in Group B. A win of any kind will give them the most points and get them the best matchup in the quarterfinals despite the overtime loss to Russia on Wednesday.
For Team USA, the win would have to come in regulation to get the top seed. Having already lost to Russia, they don’t hold the tiebreaker if both they and Russia finish with eight points. An extra-time win does earn them second in the group, and puts all of Russia, USA, and Sweden on eight points, which is the hope of everyone who just wants to see some chaos.
