Russia started off the tournament with a victory over the United States, knocking off a key opponent in their quest to win Group B. Tonight they face the second of them, and can secure top spot and the best quarterfinal that comes with it if the get past Sweden in regulation.
Russia’s top line came alive on Tuesday night versus Austria, with Vasili Podkolzin breaking out with a three-point night. Sweden has been getting its scoring by committee with Noel Gunler and Theodor Niederbach leading the way. Through two games, they have outscored opponents 11-1, but they do see their toughest matchups on back-to-back days to end the tournament.
It won’t be easy to sweep both contests, but that’s the task in front of them if they’re going to keep an unbeaten streak that goes back 15 years alive. It would be an impressive feat for a team forced to make major changes after a COVID outbreak before leaving for the tournament, and we’ll see tonight how prepared they are for that challenge.
