Canada kicked off its tournament in expected fashion on Saturday night, facing a decimated, overworked German side and coming away with a 16-2 victory.

Dylan Cozens had the most impressive performance for Canada, with three goals and three assists to lead the tournament in all offensive categories. Dawson Mercer, the “13th forward,” isn’t far behind, with two goals and two assists on the night.

Now feeling on top of the world after a good start, the Canadian squad gets a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal when they take on a somewhat surprising Team Slovakia. The Slovaks pulled off a bit of an upset in the tournament’s opening game when they didn’t just sneak past the Swiss, but outshot them on the way to a 1-0 victory. In the goaltending battle, Simon Latkoczy stopped all 28 shots he faced, saving one of the most difficult for last:

Even without Latkoczy’s acrobatics, as Simon Hlavaj gets the call today, the team will certainly pose a bigger challenge for Canada, though just a single goal probably won’t be enough. There should be a few power plays for Slovakia to work with today, and they will need to find a way to take advantage of them.
