Team USA kept stepping on its own feet on the first day of competition, and you can’t afford to do that when facing a team as skilled as the one Russia brings to the tournament each year. Russia capitalized on every mistake as Spencer Knight was unable to bail his team out in goal, and the result was a 5-3 loss for the American side.
Austria may be among the weakest teams overall at the tournament, but they still have players who will take advantage if USA plays a sloppy game again today. Marco Rossi is one of the top young offensive minds in the game, and has a few decent finishers around him to set up for goals.
His team didn’t look out of place while playing Switzerland in a tune-up game on December 22. They fell by just a single goal in that match, and showed off a structured power-play formation that will give top teams plenty of trouble. Team USA should come out on top tonight, but don’t be shocked if Austria is able to make it a bit closer than expected.
