Team Canada opened up its World Juniors slate with an exceptional comeback victory over Team USA. Even being unable to fend of a potent American man advantage they outscored their North American rival, thanks in large part to a four-point effort from Alexis Lafrenière. If it’s possible to boost the stock of a player already projected to go first overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, that performance certainly did the trick.

Getting the job of limiting the talented forward will be Alexander Romanov for Team Russia. The Montreal Canadiens prospect led his country in ice time on Thursday versus the Czech Republic. Russia didn’t win that contest, and now has back-to-back games versus Canada and the United States. If they want to finish in a good position when the quarter-finalls arrive, they will need a win from at least one of the games this weekend.
