World Juniors 2017: Sweden vs. Switzerland, USA vs. Slovakia Preview, TV Schedule, rosters, lines, & more

The third day of the World Junior Hockey Championship sees four teams in action.

The World Juniors schedule is a little bit more relaxed today, with only two games — one in Group A, one in Group B.

5:00 PM EST Sweden vs. Switzerland (TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5)

Alex Nylander and Rasmus Dahlin led Sweden to a decisive victory over Denmark on Monday, but Switzerland had a good showing in their first game, as well, with a 4-3 OT win against the Czech Republic. Switzerland’s last few years at the World Juniors have been less successful than what they’d hoped, but 2017 looks promising so far.

However, today they’re going up against a Swedish team that felt comfortable leaving top prospect Timothy Liljegren off their roster entirely, and that blue line still looks as strong as you would expect from any Swedish men’s team. With Felix Sandström returning in net this year, and some significant scoring power up front, the Swedes are in a good position to rebound from 2016’s disappointing fourth-place finish.

7:30 PM EST USA vs. Slovakia (TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5)

After only registering six shots on goal in a losing effort against Canada, the Slovaks are probably hoping for an easier opponent in this USA squad. The Americans did defeat Latvia 6-1 on Monday, but there were some rough patches in the second period, along with more power plays and scoring chances against than the US would have preferred.

Returning alternate captain Colin White may have new linemates this year, but the team’s top line continues to deliver, with 2016 first-round picks Clayton Keller and Tage Thompson chipping in to fill the scoring void left by Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk.

Erik Cernak was named Slovakia’s player of the game in their opener against Canada, but NYR prospect Adam Huska was the main attraction recording 39 saves on 44 shots. Huska played all but seven minutes for Slovakia in last year’s tournament, so we can expect to see a lot more of him this week.
