World Juniors 2014 Game Thread: USA vs Russia

New, comments

It's the first day of elimination play and Team USA takes on a high powered Russian team.

Bruce Bennett

Team USA suffered their first loss of this years tournament in a closely contested 3-2 loss to Team Canada, and with the loss the Americans drew the tough task of facing a Russian side with arguably the best goalie in the tournament Andrei Vasilesvski. Also on the Russian side are Sabres first round picks Mikhail Grigorenko and Nikita Zadorov in addition to Anton Slepyshev, Ivan Barbashev and Valentin Zykov. Clearly the Russian team is very deep and has the ability to score goals in bunches.

The Americans boast their usual quick hard forechecking line up and will attempt to knock off the Russians in the elimination round for the second straight year. Matt Grzelyck and Nic Kerdiles lead the Americans with 6 points each and goaltender Jon Gillies will look to rebound after suffering his first loss vs Canada on New Years Eve.

Puck Drop is scheduled for 6:00am so have some coffee on hand folks.
