Victor Mete claimed off waivers by the Ottawa Senators

Attempting to create salary and roster flexibility, the Montreal Canadiens placed Victor Mete on waivers on Sunday. He has been claimed by the first team in the priority order, going to the Ottawa Senators.

The Senators traded two defenders on Sunday: former Canadien Mikey Reilly and Braydon Coburn.

With the pending trade including Jon Merrill on Sunday, Mete’s place on the NHL roster was precarious, especially with the emergence of Otto Leskinen who took his spot in the lineup on Saturday.

Mete being placed on waivers was perhaps an indication that trade interest in the defenceman was not high. Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin then tried to sneak him through waivers to provide himself with more roster and salary flexibility.

He has played 14 games this season, and has three assists. He has six penalty minutes and is +3.

He has played 185 NHL games with four goals and 30 assists. He was the team’s fourth-round pick (100th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft.
