Canada and the United States came into the 4 Nations Face-Off as the two favourites to win. After two games played, they stood at the top of the standings with a win apiece, and today’s round-robin game between the two nations could very well be a preview of the final that goes on February 20.
Players on both sides have been explaining just how much they’ve been looking forward to this matchup, dating back years as hockey never really had any best-on-best tournaments with no Olympics participation and the IIHF World Championship falling during the NHL post-season. As far as they’re concerned, today’s game is just as good as a final, and the play on the ice will match that mindset.
Expect a lot of animosity in this game, egged on by a partisan crowd that adds a real hero/villain dynamic to proceedings. That could mean a lot of power plays as the officials try to keep the game in check, and that might mean plenty of goals in the marquee matchup of the preliminary round.
