The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenceman Gianni Fairbrother to his entry-level contract.

The contract will start next season. The team had until this summer to sign Fairbrother to a deal. He was the team’s third-round pick, 77th overall, in the 2019 NHL Draft.

He played three games for the Laval Rocket this season under a try out agreement while waiting for the WHL season to begin. He had one assist in his debut.

As the contract will start next season, it will have no effect on the contract space the team currently has available this year. He will be eligible to return to the Laval Rocket if his junior season ends before the AHL season does.

The agreement, which has an AAV of $848,333.33, will see Fairbrother earn $750,000 at the NHL level in both 2021-22 and 2022-23 and $775,000 in 2023-24. The deal also contains signing bonus payments of $92,500 in both 2021-22 and 2022-23 and $85,000 in 2023-24. Fairbrother is set to make $70,000 per season at the AHL level.
