Though the Montreal Canadiens stood pat on day one of the draft, they have decided to make a move for the second day. Sending their 56th overall pick to Tampa Bay, they will move down to 123rd this year, and add a second-round pick in next year’s draft

It seems there just wasn’t anyone that they were immediately interested in, so this is essentially just a deferral to next year’s draft with an extra pick down at 123. There were some intriguing players available, so it’s an odd move, but they’ll add to an already strong amount of picks next offseason.
The Canadiens will now be waiting until round three to make their next pick.
