Montreal Canadiens trade Andrew Shaw to Blackhawks

The Canadiens get three draft picks for the veteran forward.

The Montreal Canadiens have traded Andrew Shaw to the Chicago Blackhawks in the lead up to free agency on July 1.

The Canadiens acquired a second and seventh round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. They sent a seventh-round pick to Chicago in 2021 as well.

It is a jarring reverse of situation from three years ago when the Canadiens acquired Shaw for two second-round picks at the 2016 NHL Draft.

Surely this is to free up salary cap space. Shaw has three years remaining on his contract at $3.9 million per season. The Canadiens are now up to around $12 million in cap space.

Shaw had his best season with the team last season where he scored 19 goals and 28 assists for 47 points in 63 games.

Montreal now has 11 picks in the 2020 NHL Draft including two picks in the second and three fourth-round picks.

Surely there is more news to come from Marc Bergevin in the coming days.
