Tomas Plekanec named Czech captain for World Cup

Montreal Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec was officially named as captain for the Czech Republic’s entry for the World Cup of Hockey this morning.

This should no longer be a surprise as Plekanec was the team’s captain at the 2014 Sochi Olympics as well as the 2012 and 2015 World Hockey Championships. It is clear that if he is on the team, he’s their go-to captain.

Plekanec has played 81 games for the Czech Republic at the senior level, scoring 25 goals and adding 30 assists.

Camps for the World Cup of Hockey start next week. Exhibition games are scheduled across the world the next week with the tournament’s first official round robin game on September 17.

Plekanec is one of six Habs to play at the World Cup along with Andrei Markov and Alexei Emelin of Russia, Carey Price and Shea Weber of Canada and Max Pacioretty of the United States.
