Today in Habs history

1955: Montreal announced that Henri Richard had been signed to a two-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens. Dave Stubbs noted today on Twitter that the contract was actually signed the night before, but made official on the 13th. Richard’s salaries were $7K and $8K for his first two seasons.

1957: Rookie Charlie Hodge recorded his 2nd career shutout, and Maurice Richard and Dickie Moore each scored hat tricks as the Canadiens won 6-0 over the Detroit Red Wings. It was the 26th and final career hat trick for Richard who also picked up an assist

1962: Henri Richard scored two goals and added two assists in the Habs’ 6-3 win against the New York Rangers.

1964: Hodge recorded his 15th career shutout in the Canadiens’ 3-0 win over the Rangers, at New York.

1970: Roger Doucet sang “O Canada” for the first time at the Montreal Forum, before a 4-3 Canadiens’ win over the Red Wings. He remained the Forum’s national anthem singer for the next 10 years. 1973: The Buffalo Sabres beat the Minnesota North Stars 4-3. In that game, Minnesota, and former Habs goalie Gump Worsley wore mask for the first time in his 21 year NHL career.

1974: Yvan Cournoyer scored his 6th career hat trick, and Frank Mahovlich had a goal and three assists as the Canadiens won 4-3 against the Vancouver Canucks.

1984: Habs rookie Chris Chelios scored his first NHL goal, in a 4-3 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins. On the same night, future Habs captain Kirk Muller scored the first goal of his NHL career, in a 4-1 Devils‘ loss at Detroit.

1986: Mats Naslund scored his third career hat trick and added an assist as the Canadiens won 6-4 against the visiting Minnesota North Stars.

1999: Former Habs captain Pierre Turgeon scored his 400th career NHL goal as his St. Louis Blues lost 4-2 at Detroit.
