In a surprising move, the Montreal Canadiens have traded a 2018 sixth-round pick to the Detroit Red Wings for veteran forward Steve Ott.

Earlier in the evening, it has been speculated by Kevin Weekes that such a move might be made, but there was little reason to suspect the transaction would actually occur with the Habs in desperate need of more offence.
The Habs didn’t give up much in the trade, and Ott’s $800,000 salary won’t put too much of a dent in the Habs’ available cap space, but it’s difficult to see where Ott can fit into a lineup that is already chock full of bottom-six talent.
