The only way the final game of the round robin would have meant anything is if the first game on Monday had gone beyond regulation. Team USA had already secured its spot in Thursday’s final, and Canada or Finland could hit a point total of five with a regulation win that Sweden could only match, and they had already lost to both Canada and Finland and did not hold the tiebreaker.
Finland made the first game of the day a lot closer than it probably should have been, turning a four-goal deficit into just one in the third period. Only a Sidney Crosby empty-netter prevented them from having a chance to equalize the game in the final minute to temporarily claim the second seed in the tournament while also doing their neighbour a favour.
The Americans are using this game to rest Connor Hellebuyck and Connor McDavid’s shadow, Charlie McAvoy, and allowing Matthew Tkachuk to recover form the injury he sustained versus Canada. There are no tournament repercussions for the game’s result, but Sweden will want to claim a win after two overtime losses, and the Americans will want to stay focused as they prepare for the rematch versus Canada in the championship game.
