Steve Ott hired by St. Louis Blues as assistant coach

In a surprise turn of events, Steve Ott will be joining the St. Louis Blues as an assistant coach.

He was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Ott was acquired at the Trade Deadline by Marc Bergevin from the Detroit Red Wings for a sixth-round pick. Ott appeared in 11 games for the Canadiens, and had one assist. He also played in six playoff games without getting a point.

He had said at the team’s locker clear out that he hoped to be back, but perhaps got an indication that the market for him as a player would not be what he wanted. He will now work under Mike Yeo in St. Louis.

In his career, Ott played in 848 games in the regular season and 61 playoff games. He had 288 points. Ott was a first round pick of the Dallas Stars in 2000 and played for Dallas, Buffalo, St. Louis and Detroit before coming to Montreal.
