IceCaps vs. Phantoms recap: Caps road trip kicks off with a loss

The St. John's IceCaps began their six game road trip, dropping the contest 5-1 to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

The St. John's IceCaps kicked off their six-game road trip on Wednesday night at the PPL Centre, where they played the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Unfortunately, the IceCaps would drop this one by a score of 5-1.

In what was a rare occurrence so far this season, the IceCaps were poor offensively. The visitors only managed to put three shots on Phantoms goaltender Anthony Stolarz in the first period.

However, they did get on the board first. Swiss forward Sven Andrighetto converted on the power play at 13:59 of the period to give the IceCaps an early advantage.

The team's leading scorer, Bud Hollway, drew an assist, as did defensemen Mark Barberio, who extended his point streak to three games. Alas, the lead was short lived. Less than a minute later, Nick Cousins, replied for the home side to even things at one heading into the intermission.

Cousins picked up right where he left off in the second frame. The 22 year old centre beat IceCaps starter Dustin Tokarski for the second time in the game, putting the Flyers farm team up 2-1. It was much of the same throughout the remainder of the period. St. John's could only muster 8 shots in the frame, while the Phantoms put two more past a shaky Tokarski. Kevin Goumas and Shayne Gostisbehere each scored their first goals of the season, giving Lehigh Valley a three goal cushion.

In the third and final period, it was Phantoms forward Taylor Leier who had the lone goal, making it 5-1, and putting the game out of reach for the IceCaps.

St. John's is back to face the Phantoms on Friday night in game two of their six game road trip. They'll certainly be looking to put a little more rubber on the net in that game, hopefully getting back to their offensive ways.
Since losing his job with the Canadiens, it has been a tough start to the season for Dustin Tokarski. He is now 2-2-1 and sporting a save percentage of .891. Meanwhile, Zachary Fucale has gone 3-0-0 with a .926 save percentage.
