IceCaps vs. Senators recap: Charles Hudon extends point streak to five games, but St. John’s falls once again
The IceCaps remain winless after the first two matches of a six-game homestand.
The St. John’s IceCaps were back in action on Wednesday night, once again against the Binghamton Senators.
Much like the previous night’s game, the IceCaps found themselves behind in the first period, as Jack Rodewald and Max McCormick both had goals in the frame for the Senators. The IceCaps did get one on the board, however, when Yannick Veilleux tucked in his fifth of the season past Andrew Hammond.

In the second period, Charles Hudon knotted things up at two with his 17th of the season. With the goal, Hudon extended his point streak to five games (4G, 4A).

Binghamton retook the lead just two minutes later. Nick Paul tipped in his second of the season past Yann Danis.
Later on in the period, an errant Brett Lernout drop pass led to a two-on-one for the Senators. Jason Akeson made a great cross-crease pass to Phil Varone, who buried his 13th. The goal sent Binghamton into the final frame with a 4-2 lead.
The third started as poorly as possible for St. John’s. On the opening shift, Akeson beat Danis with a wrist shot from the high slot, extending the lead to 5-2 in favour of the Sens.
The IceCaps would respond, tanks to a Stefan Matteau goal. Matteau’s shot went high over the net, but ricocheted back in front, hitting Hammond and bouncing in.

St. John’s managed to bring themselves within a goal late in the period. Daniel Carr knocked in Hudon’s rebound for his fifth AHL goal of the year.

Chris Terry had a massive opportunity to tie the game with under a minute remaining, but Hammond — at full stretch — robbed the IceCaps’ leading scorer with a glove save. (He’s not called the Hamburglar for nothing).

The Senators added a sixth goal with four seconds remaining. Former Hab Mike Blunden’s empty-net goal marked the end of a forgettable two-game series against one of the weakest North Division teams for the IceCaps.
