The Montreal Canadiens lost one of two players they placed on waivers on Sunday, as forward Samuel Blais was claimed by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Blais spent last season with the Abbotsford Canucks, winning a Calder Cup, and will now reunite with his former coach when he was with the St. Louis Blues, Craig Berube.

Losing Blais is unfortunate for the Laval Rocket, but the Canadiens have the depth in the organization. Joe Veleno beat him out for the 13th forward spot, and the Canadiens have forwards like Owen Beck and Florian Xhekaj, among others primed for a call up should they need a call up.

Toronto also claimed former Canadiens goaltender Cayden Primeau to back up Anthony Stolarz while Joseph Woll is on a leave of absence. They had waived Michael Pezzetta, who was unclaimed on waivers and will play for the Toronto Marlies.

It is unlikely, but possible, that Blais will suit up for Toronto in the season opener against Montreal on Wednesday.
