The Laval Rocket just can’t gain a foothold in the AHL’s conference finals. They had a decent start in Game 3, which hadn’t been the case in the opening two matches, but that was quickly forgotten with a four-goal outburst from the Checkers in the middle frame.
What was a daunting task of winning two out of the three games in Charlotte to have a shot at claiming the series back at home has now turned into a case of the regular-season champions needing to reel off four consecutive victories. At this point, given how the series has gone so far, that doesn’t seem probable, but it would all start with how Laval plays on its half of the ice.
The series has been highlighted by odd-man rushes for the Checkers as they get in behind the Rocket defence, and breakdowns in the coverage around the net leaving forwards open for point-blank opportunities. Considering that the top prospects on the team play on the blue line, if this is to be Laval’s last game of the season, you would like to see some composure in an elimination match from Logan Mailloux, David Reinbacher, and Adam Engström as we enter an off-season with a spot having opened up on the Montreal Canadiens’ roster.
