It wasn’t just a bad start to Game 1, but a bad start in each of the next two periods as well that doomed the Laval Rocket in the opening game of the Eastern Conference Final. Yet outside of those slow opening stretches, the home team played a rather solid game, controlling the puck and getting chances that just wouldn’t go past goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen.

The Rocket know they can play better and convert more of their chances, and they will need to find consistency from the opening puck drop to avoid going down 0-2. Even versus an experienced team like Charlotte, the Montreal Canadiens’ young prospects looked strong in the opener, and tonight they will be prepared to play the style this final-four series requires.

The Florida Panthers made their move to advance to the Stanley Cup Final on the road in Game 5 versus the Carolina Hurricanes. Tonight, the Edmonton Oilers will aim to answer that accomplishment in Dallas.

Game 4 was another case of Edmonton controlling the majority of the possession, but the Stars did come out in the first period as the better team. Dallas had 16 shots in the opening 20 minutes, but the Oilers led 1-0 after the frame. The Stars managed to put the puck on target just 13 times in the final 40 minutes.

An early goal against might dispirit the Stars who haven’t had much luck versus the Oilers’ defence and even less versus Stuart Skinner. A quick Oilers start is therefore the order of the day as the last Canadian team standing hopes to be presented with the Clarence Campbell Bowl at the end of the night.
