Report: The Habs will sign Karl Alzner to a five-year contract

With free agency just a few hours away from officially getting under way, the Montreal Canadiens have reportedly made their first move. It seems that Bergevin will be offering a five-year contract with a $4.5 million AAV to former Washington Capitals defenceman Karl Alzner.

Rumours about the Canadiens’ interest in the blue-liner had been circulating for a few weeks, and it seems the Habs presented the most enticing offer.

He will likely be used on the top pairing alongside Shea Weber, and it will be interesting to see how those two players not necessarily known for their puck-moving will fare playing together.

According to Francois Gagnon, the deal is far from finalized, although negotiations are ongoing.
