Team Canada announces World Junior selection camp roster

Habs 2015 first-round pick Noah Juulsen expected to play big role

Team Canada today released the 32 names who will compete for a spot for their 2017 World Junior Hockey Championship roster.

Among the names on the camp roster is Montreal Canadiens 2015 first-round pick Noah Juulsen.

Juulsen, who plays for the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, has had a resurgent season after a tough year last year where he was one of the final cuts from the roster.

He has seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points in 21 games this season. He only had seven goals and 21 assists in 63 games last year. For more on Juulsen’s turnaround read this piece by EOTP’s Mitch Brown.

This is his final year of eligibility for the Under-20 team, and it is no doubt good timing for him. The playoff round of the tournament is in Montreal and is surely something he is looking forward to.

Other Habs prospects goaltender Michael McNiven, and defenceman Victor Mete have also been named to the camp roster.

Thomas Chabot, who started the year with the Ottawa Senators is the only defenceman eligible to return to this year’s team. Dylan Strome was also named to camp after starting the year in the NHL.

The World Junior camp will also be held in the Montreal area, at the Centre d’Excellence Sports Rousseau in Blainville from December 11-14. It will feature three games, two against a team of U Sports (formerly CIS) all-stars and a third against the Czech Republic.

The team will be announced at the end of the camp.

The tournament gets underway December 26 in Montreal and Toronto. Canada will have exhibition games December 19 in Montreal, December 21 in Ottawa and December 23 in Toronto.
