Erik Gustafsson acquired by the Montreal Canadiens for seventh-round pick

Minutes before the 2021 NHL Trade Deadline, Marc Bergevin made a move to add another defenceman, acquiring Erik Gustafsson from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Gustafsson, like many members of the Flyers, has had a poor season. After being a significant contributor for the Chicago Blackhawks in his first few years in the league, he had just 10 points in Philadelphia this year.

Whether he can rediscover that offensive touch remains to be seen, or if he’ll be given the opportunity to play that role. We will find out if he gets into a game in the near future, but at this point this seems like a depth signing to cover any injuries the Canadiens are forced to deal with down the stretch.

The Flyers are retaining 50% of Gustafsson’s contract amount, leaving $1.5 million on Montreal’s books.
