NHL Trade Deadline – Ben Bishop acquired by the Lightning

The Mountain Who Skates has been acquired by Steve Yzerman and the Tampa Bay Lightning from the Ottawa Senators.

The incredibly oversized Bishop will join Anders Lindback as perhaps the largest goaltending duo in NHL history. Bishop has been lights out this season in Ottawa, where he’s posted a .922 save percentage, but alarmingly that makes him the worst goaltender to play a game for the Senators this season.

Robin Lehner’s incredible game against Boston last night may have been the final nail in Bishop’s coffin as a Senator.

In spite of Bishop’s excellent season though, he’s just a .911 goaltender in his career, below league average. So once again the Lightning have acquired a large goaltender who doesn’t have a great history of success.

The return for Ottawa is a 4th round pick and rookie Cory Conacher. Conacher has been riding percentages for scoring this season, but he’s a very good young player. This is a severe overpayment once again for a goaltender who isn’t likely to make the Lightning much better long term.

Terrible trade by Yzerman, brilliant trade by Bryan Murray.
