Up 1-0 late in the first period, the Capitals watched as the Lightning headed toward their end and tied things up. Fortunately for them, what they saw were six opposing skaters on the ice at the time, so the goal was called back, and a penalty assessed for the infraction.

It took Alex Ovechkin just a few seconds to capitalize on the situation, firing a puck past Andrei Vasilevskiy moments after the offensive-zone faceoff to quickly turn what had looked like a 1-1 tie into a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission. The Capitals scored again minutes into the second, and again before the midway mark of the game, never looking back on their way to a 4-2 win.

The Lightning know they can’t fall into such a big hole in tonight’s game, and should be expected to come out with a more determined effort. If not, it could be an uphill climb versus a team that is beginning to figure things out as they go along.
