NHL jersey ads: Western Conference edition

Do you remember when the NHL put in place a jersey tuck rule? Most of us laughed it off as another strange decision, although it was clear at the time that the league wasn’t interested in player safety as they suggested.

By penalizing players who tucked in their jerseys, the NHL was paving the way for the inevitable: jersey advertising.

It was only a matter of time, but as you surely know by now according to NHL chief operating officer John Collins, ads on NHL jerseys will be appearing on NHL jerseys at some point in the future. The NHL will be the first of the ‘big four’ leagues to make the jump, although it’s likely that the rest of the leagues follow suit.

Will the NHL teams keep the advertising to a minimum like some European leagues? Or will they go the Ambri Piotta route right off the bat? That’s left to be seen, but there’s one thing that’s for certain: it won’t be pretty.
