The Montreal Canadiens have selected Ryan Poehling at 25th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry draft. It is the 100th draft pick in the Trevor Timmins era.

Poehling is a centre, who developed in the NCAA, playing for St. Cloud state. In 35 games last year Poehling produced seven goals and six assists.

At 6’2” Poehling is certainly an imposing figure, although his offensive upside is still to be determined. He had a very good Under-18 tournament with Team USA with three goals and two assists and five points for Team USA.

He had pre-draft ratings ranging from 12 (Craig Button) to 27 (Corey Pronman) and was 20th on our consensus rankings.

Quotable: “He and Shane Bowers both have that solid all around hockey player feel to them but just lack that high end skill you want prospects you select really early in the draft to possess. Poehling had a good second half. He’s a hard worker all over the ice and has also produced on the score board.” - Hockey Prospect Black Book.
