The Montreal Victoire have made a veteran add to their forward group, signing Shiann Darkangelo to a two-year contract on Tuesday, the second day of the PWHL’s free agency period.
Darkangelo, 31, was most recently with the Ottawa Charge where she had eight goals and seven assists in 30 games this season. She added one goal in eight playoff games, the game-winner in Game 1 of the PWHL Semifinal against the Victoire.
“A proven leader on and off the ice, Shiann brings the championship experience every team needs. A reliable two-way centre, she excels in all three zones and contributes in every special team situation, making her a versatile player,” said Victoire general manager Danièle Sauvageau.
She has had a long career in the CWHL, and NWHL/PHF prior to the PWHL, playing 54 games in the CWHL and 79 in the PHF. She played mostly with the Toronto Furies and won two Isobel Cups.
Darkangelo was originally drafted by Boston in the inaugural PWHL draft before being traded to Ottawa at last season’s trade deadline.
She is from Royal Oak, Michigan, and played her NCAA hockey split between Syracuse and Quinnipiac. She won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2016 World Championship.
“I am thrilled to be joining Montreal and grateful for the opportunity to represent such a passionate city and fan base. I’m looking forward to being part of a great group of teammates, and can’t wait for the season to start,” said Darkangelo.
Darkangelo is someone who can provide a boost to Montreal’s middle-six, taking some defensive pressure off of Kristin O’Neill, while also having the ability to generate offence.
