After an off-season of wondering whether the Montreal Victoire and Abby Boreen would ever find a path to see the 2024 draft pick wear the team’s colours, news came on Friday that Boreen signed a three-year contract with the team.

The 24-year-old played nine PWHL games last season with Minnesota as a reserve player, scoring four goals and adding an assist. She also played five playoff games, with one assist in their series win against Toronto.

Boreen entered the draft in order to be eligible to sign a full-time contract. She expected to stay in Minnesota, but Montreal drafted her in the third round leading to questions surrounding her pharmaceutical studies and whether she would be able to join the team.

“I am grateful and excited to be joining Montréal’s organization. I am looking forward to this new journey in my life and having the opportunity to play in front of such a passionate fanbase,” said Boreen.

“We are extremely happy to have concluded this agreement with training camp right around the corner. Because of her experience in our league, we already knew what Abby could bring to our team when we selected her in June. The energy and fierceness she brings to the ice will most certainly please our fans,” said Victoire General Manager Danièle Sauvageau.

She played five years at the University of Minnesota, wearing the ‘C’ in her final season. She will immediately have the ability to jump start Montreal’s top-six and add some much needed scoring depth to the roster.

Boreen is the third 2024 draft pick to sign a contract, joining Cayla Barnes and Jennifer Gardiner, drafted in the first and second rounds respectively. They also added 2023 draft pick Lina Ljungblom.

Training camp starts November 12, with the season opener on November 30.
