Canadiens vs. Sabres third period thread

The second period offered more of what you can expect from this particular matchup. The Habs were pressing, leading slightly in possession on the strength of two powerplays. The Sabres seemed the more threatening of the two teams, and eventually broke through at the nine-minure mark of the second period on their first powerplay of the game.

Nicolas Deslauriers, a Montreal native, scored the game-opener on a deflection set up by Jake McCabe to put the Sabres up 1-0.

But just nine seconds later, Alex Galchenyuk unloaded another one-timer for his tenth goal in his past eight games, and 24th of the year, tying the guy who set him up on a backpass from behind the net, Max Pacioretty, for the team lead.

Mike Brown dropped his gloves for the first time as a Hab and ended up getting tossed by Nicolas Deslauriers who is two-thirds completed a Gordy Howe hat-trick so far tonight. The fight seemed to up the nastiness level, as on the next shift there was another small scrum after the whistle.

The Sabres thought they had regained the lead with around four and a half minutes left on a puck that was deflected off the post. The Sabres went from thinking they were ahead in the game to down a man when Zach Bogosian took a selfish slashing penalty, two-handing Jacob de la Rose nowhere near the puck.

Alex Galchenyuk recorded his third two-goal game in a row, one-timing (of course) his 25th goal of the season on a set-up from his other first-line linemate, Sven Andrighetto. That line has combined for 15 points in the last three games (7G, 8A).
