Report: Montreal Canadiens looking at top-four defencemen in trade talks

The Montreal Canadiens are inquiring about top-four left defencemen on the trade market according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.

LeBrun mentions Calgary Flames defenceman T.J. Brodie specifically which is a new name. He previously mentioned Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere yesterday.

Gostisbehere, 26, has four years remaining at $4.5 million on his contract. Brodie is 29 and has one year remaining at $4.65 million. Both players become unrestricted free agents at the end of their contracts.

Marc Bergevin mentioned on Thursday when talking to the media that he is looking at adding a defenceman and that he may be shying away from the free agent market given some of the contracts already handed out to Jeff Skinner and Kevin Hayes.

The Canadiens have been looking for someone to play next to Shea Weber since acquiring the defenceman from the Nashville Predators. Currently, the team has Victor Mete and Brett Kulak as the top left-handed defencemen on the roster.
