After essentially publicly announcing his time with the Montreal Canadiens was done at the team’s locker clear out, Brendan Gallagher’s time with the organization came to an expected end on Monday, when he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for future considerations.
The Canadiens retained 50% of Gallagher’s $6.5 million cap hit, which expires at the end of this season. Considering there is no return, clearly this was done as a favour to the long-time Canadien rather than simply buying him out after he said it was time to move on from the organization.
Gallagher, who played with the Vancouver Giants in the WHL and was asked about the possibility of joining the Canucks, was drafted in the fifth round (147th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2012-13 season and was the longest tenured member of the Canadiens organization.
The 34-year old had seven goals and 16 assists in 77 games this season, and had one goal in three playoff games. Over his career, he has 487 points (246G, 241A) in 911 career NHL regular season games. He added 34 points (14G-20A) in 79 playoff games.
