Montreal Canadiens sign Phil Varone to one-year, two-way contract

The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward Phil Varone to a one-year, two-way contract.

The 28-year-old forward played 47 games for the Philadelphia Flyers last season, scoring three goals and adding four assists for seven points.  Varone is 5’10” and 194 lbs and would count as an AHL veteran.

The contract pays Varone $700,000 in the NHL and $450,000 in the AHL. It would be the NHL minimum.

He was a fifth-round pick by the San Jose Sharks in the 2009 NHL Draft. Last year, he also played 22 games in the AHL for Lehigh Valley, scoring 11 goals and adding 17 assists in 22 games, over a point per game.

Varone will provide depth to the organization as he can be a player who can excel at the AHL level and provide some games at the NHL level if needed. In 488 AHL games he has 123 goals and 273 assists (396 points). In 97 NHL games he has eight goals and nine assists (17 points).
