Montreal Canadiens sign Jakub Dobeš to entry-level contract

The Montreal Canadiens have signed goaltender Jakub Dobeš to a two-year entry-level contract, the team announced on Friday.

The entry-level contract will start next season, but the Laval Rocket have signed a try-out contract for the remainder of the season with the goaltender, so he will finish the season there.

Dobeš was born in Ostrava, Czechia and is 21 years old. He is 6’4″, 201lbs and was the Canadiens’ fifth-round pick (136th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft. He has played in North America since the 2017-18 season. He went to high school in the St. Louis area and played in the NAHL and USHL before starting his NCAA career at Ohio State University.

He played 75 games with the Buckeyes, going 42-28-5 with a 2.29 goals against average and .926 save percentage. He notably started every game for Ohio State this season, going 21-16-3 with a 2.31 goals against average and .918 save percentage.

His NCAA season and career came to an end with a loss to Quinnipiac in the NCAA tournament, days after he ended Sean Farrell’s NCAA career with a win over Harvard.

He is the fourth player from the 2020 NHL Draft to sign their entry-level contract with the Canadiens, joining Kaiden Guhle, Jan Mysak, and Farrell.
