The Montreal Canadiens have added some veteran defensive depth, signing right-handed defenceman Gustav Lindström to a one-year, two-way contract on Wednesday.
Lindstrom was signed as organizational depth, and was placed on waivers with the purpose of going to the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League.
Lindström, 25, played 46 games with the Canadiens and the Anaheim Ducks in 2023-24, registering 10 points (3G, 7A) and posting a plus-12 differential. He played 14 games with the Canadiens before being placed on waivers and being claimed by the Ducks. He also played four games for the Laval Rocket that season.
Lindstrom was acquired from the Detroit Red Wings in the Jeff Petry trade.
With David Reinbacher’s injury, the Canadiens and Rocket have a need for an additional right-handed defender. Currently in Laval, Logan Mailloux and Josh Jacobs are the only healthy right-handed defenders.
The Laval Rocket start their season on Friday with two games on the road before their home opener on October 18.
