The Montreal Canadiens signed one of their key performers from last season’s playoff run, locking in Alex Newhook with a four-year contract extension at a cap hit of $5.55 million.
The contract extension will kick in after this season. Newhook is in the final year of a bridge contract with a cap hit of $2.9 million. The 25-year-old had 13 goals and 12 assists in 42 regular season games before adding seven goals and three assists in 19 playoff games, including the game-winning goal in both Game 7 victories over the Tampa Bay Lightning and Buffalo Sabres.
This contract locks Newhook into a role in the team’s middle-six and provides cost certainty to the team going forward. He is the third player to sign an extension for next season, alongside Ivan Demidov and Jakub Dobeš.
Newhook was acquired for two draft picks prior to the 2023-24 season. He has a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche and has 151 career points (70 goals, 81 assists) in 338 career NHL regular season games.
