Montreal Canadiens recall Zach Fucale, Al Montoya out

Following an optional skate this morning the Montreal Canadiens have recalled goaltender Zachary Fucale from the AHL on an emergency basis.

Current back up Al Montoya suffered an upper body injury at some point this week, necessitating Fucale’s recall. Based on the nature of this recall, it means neither Montoya or Carey Price is likely to be healthy enough for the Canadiens game against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.

In his time with the Laval Rocket in the AHL this year, Fucale is 4-1-0 with a 3.46 goals against average, and .881 SV%.

With the Rocket on a back to back this weekend, rookie netminder Michael McNiven will likely start both games for the Rocket. He has yet to play a game in the AHL.

The Rocket will likely sign a goaltender to a tryout to backup McNiven like they did when Charlie Lindgren was recalled and they couldn’t get a backup goaltender to Laval quickly enough.

In other injury news, both Jonathan Drouin and Shea Weber skated today.
