The Montreal Canadiens recalled defender Logan Mailloux from the Laval Rocket on Friday.
Mailloux was likely recalled because of the status of Mike Matheson. Matheson left Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings with an upper-body injury after the first period. This indicates that it is likely serious enough that an extra body was needed, even with Jayden Struble cleared for game action.
UPDATE: The Canadiens announced that Kaiden Guhle is day-to-day with an upper-body injury of his own, while Matheson had a therapy day that kept him out of Friday’s practice. Guhle hit the boards hard early in the second period which might be related to his status.
The Rocket will get Gustav Lindström in the lineup for their home opener on Friday night, but will surely miss Mailloux, who had two goals and two assists through the first two games of the season, all in the first game. Laval also plays on Saturday afternoon. The Canadiens play the Islanders in New York on Saturday night.
This is Mailloux’s second recall. He was also recalled to play in the final regular season game last season where he earned an assist. He was an AHL All-Star last year with the Rocket, where he had 14 goals and 33 assists in 72 games last season.
