The Montreal Canadiens continued their off-season by signing one of their two remaining restricted free agents, signing goaltender Jakub Dobeš to a two-year, one-way contract on Sunday.
The contract has a cap hit of $965,000. Dobeš made his NHL debut this past season, and certainly looks to have the driver’s seat to claim the backup role to Samuel Montembeault next season. The team also has Jacob Fowler and Kaapo Kähkönen in the fold, and while they will have a chance to compete, are likely headed to the American Hockey League.
Dobeš was 7-4-3 with a 2.74 goals against average and .909 save percentage last season. In the playoffs, he was 1-2 with a 2.91 goals against average and .881 save percentage. He started the year with the Laval Rocket, and his recall to replace Cayden Primeau was one of the catalysts for a strong second half from the team.
The one-way contract and two-year term is also a sign of confidence from the team, paying him the same amount whether he is in the NHL or AHL.
The lone remaining restricted free agent the Canadiens have is defender Jayden Struble.
