Two Montreal Canadiens prospects listed on Corey Pronman’s Top 50 list

Corey Pronman ranked the Top 50 Prospects currently outside the NHL for The Athletic, and there were two Montreal Canadiens prospects in the bottom half of the list.

After a strong World Junior Hockey Championship tournament, we find St. Cloud State’s centre Ryan Poehling making the cut.

Pronman has his concerns about the potential upside of Poehling, but does point out that Poehling is “a fierce competitor who battles hard in each zone […] and is quite good defensively down the middle.”

In last summer’s Top 25 Under 25, Ryan Poehling was ranked 14 in his debut in our annual prospect list, and should climb a fair bit when the next ranking is out.

The other player to make Pronman’s Top 50 list is none other than Nikita Scherbak.

Pronman points to the young Russian’s performance in the AHL as a good indicator of a potential turnaround. “[Scherbak] stands out with the puck because he can make high-level passes and flashy plays,” he explains, but also notes that his skating is a weakness.

Scherbak was ranked #7 in 2017’s Top 25 Under 25.
