Montreal Canadiens place Kenny Agostino on waivers, Karl Alzner clears

The Montreal Canadiens have placed Kenny Agostino on waivers at the same time that news came that Karl Alzner has cleared.

Agostino on waivers opens up a roster spot. Paul Byron was placed on injured reserve Saturday, but is eligible to return since the assignment was retroactive. There are also reports that the Canadiens intend on recalling Dale Weise at some point.

The Canadiens likely want to make sure Agostino clears waivers before recalling Weise. Weise is already in Laval, and a team that has lost Michael McCarron to injury and Byron Froese in Saturday’s trade is very thin up front right now.

Agostino remains the top Rocket in terms of points per game with four goals and six assists in 12 games. He has played 36 NHL games with two goals and nine assists.

He would instantly become a very welcome addition to Laval’s top line if he clears waivers. He has been a healthy scratch for four of the last five games coming out of the bye week, playing only against the Anaheim Ducks.
