The conversations of Montreal Canadiens fans have a tendency to revisit the past – and so, perhaps more than they should. I was involved in one such conversation on Twitter yesterday, which led to a longer talk via zoom that you can view below. Myself and former Youtuber ScotianCanadien went at it online a little, then decided to have a more formal conversation without the constraints of Elon Musk’s application.
The argument was whether or not Marc Bergevin’s tenure with the Habs was a net positive, and if he deserves some credit for where the team is at now.
I sincerely doubt that we’ve changed each others opinions about the matter – I can say for my part that I am still a certified ‘hater’ of our dearly departed General Manager. That said, I do feel that some interesting points were made for and against his contributions to the current state of the team. At the very least, we proved that Bergevin haters and boosters can come together and discuss things amicably, which isn’t always the case.
I feel that the crux of my argument rings true – the Bergevin failures far outweigh his successes. He was given a team with the best goaltender in the world, and failed to do what was required to allow that goaltender to win a cup.
As always, I’d encourage a continuation of the debate in the comment section. Do you think Bergevin deserves more credit? Do you think that notion is completely ridiculous? Have your say down below in the comments.
