The Montreal Canadiens have acquired Hunter Shinkaruk from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Kerby Rychel today, in a one-for-one swap of 2013 first-round picks.

Shinkaruk was drafted 24th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 2013, five picks after Kerby Rychel. He had a prolific scoring career in the WHL before being drafted, with 103 goals in 211 games, adding another 130 assists to that point total.
He has played in 15 NHL games and has two goals and two assists in those games spanning over two seasons. In 2016-17, his last NHL time, he had one assist in seven games with the Calgary Flames. Last season he had 17 goals and 15 assists in 63 games Stockton Heat of the AHL.
He was drafted one spot ahead of the Canadiens drafting Michael McCarron.
Shinkaruk was originally traded from Vancouver to Calgary in return for Markus Granlund.
The 23-year-old is an restricted free agent, and will have to be signed by the Canadiens in order to play this season. Rychel and McCarron also remain unsigned.

It is a one-year, two-way contract.
The agreement will be pay the Calgary native $650,000 at the NHL level and $80,000 in AHL salary, with $105,000 guaranteed.
