David Savard will miss the final five games with a knee injury

David Savard missed the last couple of contests with an injury, and the Montreal Canadiens have now announced that it is a knee injury that will end his season early.

Savard was playing his second season of a four-year contract, which will end with the same number of games played, 62, as last season. He also scored the same number of goals with four, but improved his assist total by three for a total of 20 points.

He now enters a summer of uncertainty as the Canadiens will be building their future core around the younger defencemen who are now wrapping up rookie seasons. His value may be greater as a trade piece, especially with Mike Matheson filling the top role as a veteran on the blue line.

With only one recall slot remaining following the call-up of Cayden Primeau this week, the Canadiens will probably just run with the six healthy defencemen they have now, which means Chris Wideman, the team’s seventh defenceman for much of the year, will see regular action down the final stretch.

We will hope for a full recovery for Savard so he can return for a healthy 2023-24 season.
