The Montreal Canadiens traded two players to Calgary Flames for defender Brett Kulak.
Kulak has played over 100 NHL games and played most of them (71) last season with the Flames. The defenceman was a fourth round pick (105th overall) in the 2012 draft. He is on a $900,000 per year deal that was signed earlier this offseason.
The 24-year-old defender was set to start the season in Stockton Heat, and will start the season in Laval.
The Canadiens acquire defenseman Brett Kulak from the Calgary Flames, in return for defensemen Matt Taormina and Rinat Valiev. Kulak will join the Laval Rocket.

The team traded defencemen Rinat Valiev and Matt Taormina to the Flames, who were expected to be significant contributors to the Laval Rocket. This could also open a spot for Simon Desprès, who the team offered an AHL contract to.
The trade of two defencemen under contract both opens up a contract spot and a roster spot for defenceman Cale Fleury who can play in the American Hockey League this year. Fleury was at training camp with the Montreal Canadiens and played two pre-season games with the Laval Rocket.
He has not yet signed his entry-level contract.
