Mike Matheson has been awarded an ‘A’ on his shirt this upcoming season, and, together with fellow assistant captain Brendan Gallagher, will add some experience to the leadership group that backs up team captain Nick Suzuki.
Matheson was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins, along with a 2023 fourth-round draft pick, in exchange for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling in a summer 2022 trade.
The 2012 first-round pick played 48 games for the Canadiens this past season, posting eight goals and 26 assists. He is under contract until the end of the 25-26 season, the continuation of an eight year contract signed with Dale Tallon and the Florida Panthers. The contract includes a modified no trade clause, though it does seem that the Montreal Canadiens front office and team as a whole want to keep Matheson around for the foreseeable future.
